Amanda's Picks
Cry Macho (PG-13) and The Many Saints of Newark (R)
I’m happy to share that Spotlight Theatres has taken over the former B&B Theatre in Venice and all is well. On my visit I saw familiar staff, the theater was clean and bright and the ticket prices were lower. They are working to bring more food options and the bar will be stocked again soon. And of course you will be watching your movie in a renovated theater with great sound and the world’s most comfortable and (optionally) heated recliners...

Some of what the Fall Season has to offer on the small screen
Think back and I bet you can recall that feeling of anticipation for “Fall TV Season.”  You spent your summer watching re-runs, those dreaded variety shows and series you didn’t bother to record, yes record, during the regular season.  Occasionally you’d get a Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour (1971) or Northern Exposure (1990) that hit it big in the summer months. And of course, there’s Seinfeld. NBC aired the pilot episode in July 1989 and then a four-episode season the following summer with an eye to burning it off. Then it caught on and became the anchor of NBC’s Thursday night “Must See TV.”

Amanda's Picks
Clickbait, The Chair, Mr. Corman, Only Murders, Mythic Quest and Lovecraft Country
As I gear up for the Emmys, and what I hope and presume will be a banner night for Ted Lasso (Season two, on Apple TV now), I thought I’d try out a few new series and give another Emmy contender a second chance.

Amanda's Picks
Cruella (PG-13) and Fall Guy (PG-13)
Obviously as a movie reviewer, I love going to the movies as in “going” to the movies, especially the B&B Theatre in Venice. Face coverings are optional at movie theaters in Florida, but I feel more safe there than at the grocery store.

Stillwater (R) Remember Amanda Knox? The American exchange student fueled one of the biggest news stories of the 2000s, when in 2007, she was imprisoned in Italy for murdering her roommate. She was eventually found not guilty and she returned to the U.S. Imagine being Amanda’s father. That’s the premise of the new movie Stillwater
Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar (PG-13) You’ll take a very different trip in Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar (PG-13 on Hulu). This frothy, fun comedy was written by the stars Annie Mumolo and Kristen Wiig, who also wrote the screenplay for the monster 2011 female buddy comedy, Bridesmaids.

What I’m Rewatching
It’s strange how we’ll rewatch our favorite sitcom, The Office, Friends, or in my case Parks and Recreation, again and again, but that amazing movie we saw in college or on a date night—once is enough. How many times have you flipped through the menu on a cable or streaming service and thought “I love that movie,” and moved on to your favorite home renovation show?...

Amanda's Picks
This past year, I watched a lot of TV, but even a superhero (in the shows I didn’t watch), wouldn’t have enough time to see everything that was nominated for a 2021 Emmy. For that reason, instead of critiquing the nominations, here are the awards I wish we could see when the awards are televised September 19 on CBS....
