Increase Your Boating Knowledge to Be Safe on the Water
Captain Jack Sanzalone, owner and primary instructor at Boat Tutor.
Captain Jack Sanzalone, owner and primary instructor at Boat Tutor.
By Chris Cameron

Everyone wants to enjoy their time boating on the beautiful waters around Englewood. But, as a passenger, have you ever wondered, “what if something happens to the boat’s captain?” Would you be able to take control of the boat and return it safely to shore? After hearing this concern many times over, Captain Jack decided to offer classes in boating education for those who are normally not at the helm but want to build their level of knowledge to feel safer and more confident on the water.
Meet Captain Jack Sanzalone, the owner and primary instructor at Boat Tutors. He has over 38 years of boating and leadership experience on both small and large vessels; he previously spent 30 years aboard U.S. Navy Submarines and other support vessels. After retiring from the Navy, Captain Jack was a high school teacher, had a very successful commercial tour boat business as well as a fishing charter business here in SW Florida. Adding to his resume, he is certified to teach numerous courses for the U.S. Coast Guard, including OUPV (Six Pack Captains License,) Masters Upgrade, leadership and management team skills. Jack is a certified USCG Licensed Master and USCG Accessor. All classes come with the option of taking a free Florida Boating Safety Exam that will earn you your Florida Boating Safety Education ID Card, which is required for anyone born after January 1, 1988.
Captain Jack has the skills and knowledge to make you a better boater and presents the curriculum in an easy to understand format for all skill levels. He is passionate about safe boating education and teaching in general. A large percentage of his students are women whose husbands or boyfriends have always taken the helm while they have secretly worried about what they would do if that person became incapacitated. He also teaches teenagers who may now have access to the family boat as well as boat owners who feel uncomfortable out on the water, resulting in the boat sitting in storage or the driveway.
Boat Tutors offers several courses including, “Nautical Knowledge 101,” a blended 16-hour classroom training course on both weekends and weekdays for new boat owners and those who want to increase their knowledge and confidence on the water. The course includes information from bow to stern including subjects such as rules of the road, chart and buoy familiarization, docking, trailering, basic boat maintenance, VHF radio operations, float plans and so much more. “Nautical Knowledge 202” is for confident boaters desiring more advanced learning or those who may wish to plan a trip away from local waters. It includes hands-on instruction over three days such as planning a voyage, advanced rules of the road, compass corrections, and much more. Captain Jack also offers “on the water training” on your boat to take the classroom theory and apply it to practice out on the water.
Marinas, organizations, clubs and other groups are welcome to invite Boat Tutors to hold a class at their location or his. Upcoming classes scheduled include “Women at the Helm” (a women only class) on November 28-29, which is a “Nautical Knowledge 101” class, and a second weekday Nautical Knowledge “101” class December 7-10. Captain Jack will also be in booth 11 at the Ft. Myers Boat Show, November 12-15. You can learn more at www.boattutors.com or by contacting Captain Jack at 941-268•6622 or by emailing him at jack@boattutors.com.
