For the sixth year in a row, Englewood’s ChalkFest will transform the Dearborn Street sidewalk into an oversized canvas for chalk-art masterpieces. Chalkfest is open to all ages. Professional artist demonstrations include the creation of a trompe l’oeil –or visual illusion—work of art by Johan Bjurman, a noted classically trained painter. This day of discovery will also feature fun prizes and a People’s Choice award. The ChalkFest is free and sponsored by the Englewood Art Center, a division of Ringling College of Art and Design, and is presented by the Pioneer Days Committee as part of Englewood’s popular Pioneer Days festival. The event is Saturday, August 26, 9 am to 2 pm. Registration is at 8 am; however, those interested are asked to visit the EAC’s Facebook page to indicate their attendance to help determine the supplies needed. Cardboard Boat Race
 On the Horizon

Come join the fun at the Cardboard Boat Race, a traditional favorite of Englewood Pioneer Days. The event will take place on Saturday, September 2 starting at 9am with the racing beginning at 11am at Indian Mound Park, 210 Winson Ave. Participants range from kids to fun loving adults and local businesses. You can build your boat from boxes, rug tubes, sona-tubes and all things cardboard – it just needs to be sea-worthy enough to complete the race course by paddling or sailing. To give you ideas, there will be a cardboard boat building demo day at Skip’s Placida Marina, 1990 Placida Rd, on Saturday, August 19 from 9am – 3pm. You can also find boat building instructions as well as the registration form at englewoodpioneerdays.com/cardboard-boat-race.html. This event is hosted by the Coast Guard Auxiliary Englewood Flotilla 87 which operates the first aid safety booth & distributes life jackets to participants who need them.
